Margin calculator

How do I turn a margin into a markup?

Divide the margin by one minus the margin. A 20% margin is 0.2 divided by 0.8, which is a 25% markup. To go the other way, divide the markup by one plus the markup.

Free, with no sign-up. Everything is worked out in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us or stored. Use figures excluding VAT.

Written out: markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin), and margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup). Use them as decimals, so 20% is 0.2.

The converter below does it both ways. These figures come from it.

Where SUBR comes in

SUBR is AI software for UK contractors who send work out to subcontractors. Its AI reads your client quote, your office names each trade's share, and SUBR builds every scope with your costs, margin and client price left off it. Each subcontractor answers on their own link and sees only their own price.
